Gnosis was heralded as “the best of new jazz to come” in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The quartet performs Philion’s compositions with an emphasis on group interaction and hard-hitting improvisations. They have performed throughout the Chicago area and midwest at the Hyde Park Jazz Fest, Constellation, Cliff Bell’s, The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Street Cabaret, the California Clipper, and more.

Philion’s debut album, a large ensemble project called Meditations on Mingus, received widespread praise from Downbeat, JAZZIZ, Jazzwise, and more. The project was featured as a headlining act for the 2022 Chicago Jazz Festival and performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Jazz Club. Philion was one of the 2022 Jazz Institute of Chicago’s New Works Fresh Voices Fellowship recipients and has won fellowships with Luminarts and Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead.
