SUMMARY:DAN MONTGOMERY QUINTET - high-energy modern jazz
DESCRIPTION:The Dan Montgomery Quintet is a group of five close friends who have been making music together for nearly a decade. The band features Sam Priven on alto saxophone\, Neil Carson on tenor saxophone\, Jake Shapiro on piano\, Evan Hyde on drums and Dan Montgomery on upright and electric bass. The group formed at the University of Miami Frost School of Music in 2016\, when they came together to record their first record of Dan’s original music\, “Storyteller.” Since then\, they have toured in South Florida\, the Midwest\, the west coast and New York State\, held three weeklong residencies at the Black Cat Jazz Club in San Francisco\, CA\, and released two more albums: “Emotional Machines: Live in San Francisco” and “Fly.” Dan’s music is written to both evoke a vast array of powerful emotions in the listener and to tell a unique story. Hear two dragons do battle in “Ember and Rain;” escape from a haunted house in “Fast Approaching Midnight;” mourn the tragedy of loss and the beauty of rebirth and hope in “Newsong (The Heartwood).” Whatever you look for in your music\, you will find it here.  \nDan Montgomery – Bass/Compositions\nSam Priven – Alto Sax\nNeil Carson – Tenor Sax\nEvan Main – Piano\nEvan Hyde – Drums

SUMMARY:Father Sky (Ensemble)
DESCRIPTION:“Young Milwaukee pianist-singer-composer Anthony Deutsch has old-soul wisdom and speaks to people about matters of the heart\, and the mind/body disconnect that often separates us from our own nature and from Nature. \nThe style recalls the spare tune-smithing of The Bad Plus’ Ethan Iverson\, bolstered by Father Sky bassist John Christensen and drummer Devin Drobka. But Deutsch loves Nina Simone. His bluesy-gospel singing deeply abides her forlorn\, loamy eloquence—her world-weary persistence and faith. To me\, he also mirrors the exquisite jazz singer-pianist Andy Bey—the naked willingness to reveal male vulnerability. \nStill\, Deutsch’s Father Sky-meets-Mother Earth sensibility tends a personal ecological vision\, like someone picking bits of grimy dust out of a spider’s web. Deutsch croons\, but his spacious baritone sometimes projects like a wolf howling at the moon. He leans on the sustain pedal and major keys\, but the piano also dapples sun-lit atmospherics. “Soon\, My Love” has a funky kick Gil Scott-Heron would dig. “Gonna Find Home” yearns for a home that’s everywhere\, like the holy land Lakota Black Elk spoke of. This beguiling talent might just take you away\, home.” \n(Father Sky: Father Sky – By Kevin Lynch – 8 August\, 2017) \n  \nAnthony Deutsch – Vocals/keyboard/compositions \nPawan Benjamin – Saxophone/effects \nAndrew Trim – Guitar \nJohn Christensen – Bass \nDevin Drobka – Drums

SUMMARY:Jazzy Joan Presents: Sons and Daughters of Jazz Greats
DESCRIPTION:There are so many ways to explore jazz\, and Jazzy Joan continues her quest to seek out compelling ways to do just that. Staying true to her focus on current-day artists\, she sets her sight on jazz in the family – specifically\, “what happens when the child of a jazz great ‘stays in the family business?’” \nJoan has selected tunes a handful of jazz artists of great renown and their offspring\, and it’s up to you to decide whether a familial connection is there or not. She will also feature current-day artists with no apparent jazz-in-the-family ties\, yet have an uncanny familiarity with jazz artists from previous generations. \nJoan always says: “Jazz is a continuum and it’s always going somewhere else.” And where is it going? It’s everywhere\, and that’s what makes jazz exciting. Join Joan for a gorgeous night of recorded jazz that you won’t want to miss. \nJoan introduces her jazz show at 7:00\, so get there early! No cover.

SUMMARY:TIM WHALEN TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Tim’s birthday with this special show!\n\n “He is an exceptional player who fully understands the jazz language and is fully conversant with all genres of the music.”   Kenny Barron\n\nThe Tim Whalen Trio unites three deeply creative and interactive musicians: Tim Whalen on piano\, John Christensen on bass\, and Hannah Johnson on drums. Rooted in the jazz tradition yet embracing spontaneity and exploration\, the trio is known for its strong musical chemistry\, dynamic interplay\, and sense of joy on stage. Their performances move seamlessly from lyrical\, intimate moments to energetic\, swinging exchanges\, always guided by deep listening and trust among the musicians. Whether interpreting standards or performing original compositions\, the trio delivers an engaging\, memorable experience that draws audiences into the excitement of real-time musical conversation.\n\nTheir debut album\, Trio Volume 1\, is out now. \n\n“This album secures the Milwaukee native in my mind as perhaps the root of a triad of the very best straight-ahead Wisconsin jazz pianists currently working. Moreover\, it’s probably the best jazz piano trio album I’ve heard from a Badger.”\nKevin Lynch\, Shepherd Express\n  \n
